The Camp Kingsmont summer season begins Sunday, June 20, 2010. This year we have received the approval of Hampshire College to conduct an eight (8) week program. This is one week longer than last year. Campers may sign up for 2-7 or the full 8 weeks. All arrival dates are on Sundays and all departure dates are on Saturdays.

We understand that families often have summer plans in addition to Camp Kingsmont. In the event the weekly sessions set forth below do not fit with your plans, every attempt will be made to accommodate your schedule. While we recommend that campers stay with us for at least four weeks, we also recognize that situations arise that preclude this possibility.

Camp Kingsmont is a non-profit Massachusetts public charity organized ‘to promote, foster and encourage children to learn and develop good nutritional, weight management and physical education habits at a summer camp operated by a staff certified in, or studying, nutrition, weight management and physical education.’ Tuition is established each year based on a break even budget. Our anticipated costs for the year divided by the number of campers we expect for the summer yields the weekly tuition charge.

There are no hidden costs at Camp Kingsmont. Everything is in one tuition number which is based on a break even budget. Tuition includes room, three meals and a snack every day, full time supervision and support, weekly laundry, nutrition classes, cooking classes, our Expressions and Connections Programs, the use of all athletic facilities at Hampshire College, all-camp trips including 4th of July fireworks at the University of Massachusetts – Amherst, the two Lake Trips, all camp bowling, all camp skating, a trip to the movies, a trip to Six Flags New England and transportation to and from Bradley International Airport in Springfield, MA. The medical and camper supplies fees which were paid separately last year are now part of the tuition. Additionally, all camper’s parents and siblings are invited to attend Parent’s Weekend and lunch cookout (July 16) at no additional cost.

The camp provides all of its campers daily necessities, so the only reasons your child might need additional money at camp would be for spending money or participation in optional trips.

Optional trips for which there is a separate charge include horse back riding lessons, conducted at Muddy Brook Farm just down the street from campus, white water rafting on the Deerfield River, trips to the local mall for clothes to fit the new slim bodies and trips to Camelot Paintball for paintball ‘tournaments.’ Please see ‘Optional Trips’ for additional information.

Campers may also open a camper spending money account (CSMA) which will be maintained in the camp office. Campers may withdraw from their accounts to have spending money for trips off campus or to purchase merchandise in the camp store. CSMA monies may be used to cover a medical deductible if a camper visits the local doctor or for the cost of prescriptions that must be renewed while at camp. All unused spending money will be returned to each camper upon departure.

According to IRS Revenue Ruling 202-19, weight loss program costs may be tax deductible. Rev Ruling 202-19 allows for the deduction of weight loss camp tuition if participation was the result of a doctor’s prescription. A medical expense deduction will benefit you if you itemize your deductions and only to the extent your aggregate medical deductions for the year exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Please consult your tax advisor.

Most insurance companies do not define obesity itself as an illness and will not cover the cost of camp. Insurance coverage may be available, however, if a physician refers your child to camp to treat one of the host of obesity related medical conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or a sleep disorder.

In order to pursue an insurance contribution to cover all or a part of the camp tuition, please request your health plan’s coverage guidelines for the treatment of obesity. Keep detailed and accurate health records including your child’s BMI, weight history and any other health conditions. Get a letter of medical necessity from your primary care physician and any specialists. Keep detailed records of correspondence including the names of the health plan representatives, the time of your calls, substance of the conversations and copies of papers, letters and other documents related to your request for authorization. If you are initially denied coverage, you should appeal the denial. Perseverance is critical.

Although obesity is currently not considered ‘disease,’ Medicare recently moved obesity out of the ‘Not an Illness’ category. This is a clear indication that obesity will soon qualify for coverage. For those covered by private insurance, it is a step closer to covering obesity treatment including weight loss camps.
